MEDIA IMPERIALISM

The documentary entitled "The power of Nightmares (part 3-Shadow in the Cave)" by Adam Curtis was shown in class on Monday. How do you relate the information given to you in the documentary to the theory of Media Imperialism that we talked about in lecture.

The defination of Media Imperialism.

• Meida Imperialism is a theory stating that smaller countries are losing their identity due to the force-feeding of media from larger nation.

CRITICAL REFLECTION

1) After watching at youtube about this documentary of The Power Of Nightmare. I think this video is very interesting eventhough it takes a bit longer and complicated. But i realise that this video gave me so many information that i think i dont really know before this. The main idea of this video is about Neo-Conservative movement in between the radical Islamists and America.
America have their own way to make smaller countries think and giving out the idea of terrorism.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

This week, Madam Helena shows us a video. Madam Helena preffer to shows this documentary of The Power of Nightmares. As i said just now,that video is kind of a bit longer and complicated in other words is a bit bored but somehow after that video finished, i admit that i can get more information about this video. This video also make me understand more about Media Imnperialsm.

TOPIC 6

TETRAD OF MEDIA

Using McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media" (see diagram below), choose a medium or media application or tool (e.g. newspaper, books, radio, tv, film, internet, computer games, handphone, instant messaging, blogging, online advertising, youtube, facebook etc.) and explain its media effects.

CRITICAL REFLECTIONS

1) I decided to choose the internet application. In my opinion, internet application is a useful and a great media application in this world. Internet application enhances our lives with many powerful usages. It is not only for fun or communicating people but you can also find many types of information that people need. For example, you need to search for something difficult, you can just go surf the internet and search by your own and you will get all the information that you need. Internet is very good, it obsolesces the other types of media application or tool. Internet has many functions that it obsolesces other normal tools. Internet is a fast medium in many aspects ; to communicate with people, to browse for informations. By using internet, communicating is just a click away. Whereas before the existance of internet, we depend on postmen to deliver our mails. Other than that, by using internet, we can gain informations faster. As an example, we can get the latest news on the internet instead of reading the newspaper.

2) I think the usage of this application which is internet retrieves one of the main powerful of the internet is to find any of information that we need. With this media also, people can easily make or create a lot of business that they can make money from it. But if we're not smart enough to use it or in the other word people are too obsessed with the internet, it will harm yourself and your desktop too. For example, if an individual keeps on playing and downloading all the applications from the internet, he/she may download virus into his/her desktop. In conjunction with that, if someone is too obsessed with the internet, they may just give out their informations to the website, this may lead to wrong usage of credit cards, scams and hackers.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

In this week of Media Culture's class, the lecturer gave us some explaination about the topic of "The Extansion of Man" . My lecturer gave an information about the McLuhan's theory. Well honestly I've never heard of it before. Besides that, I've also learnt the hot and the cold media combine together with the Tetrad of Media. I think this week is kind of very interesting topic to learn eventhough it's a little bit complicated.

Topic 5

The meaning and the differences of Obscenity, Pornography and Indecency

I searched through the meaning of obscenity, pornography and indecency as a starter. As I searched through the internet the meaning of each word, I’ve get a clearer understanding of each word. As for the first word ‘Obscenity’, it means prohibited or permitted sex. It differs with ‘Pornography’ because ‘Obscenity’ refers to the things that are considered nauseating, fetid or morally unhealthy. As for ‘Pornography’, it means pertaining to depiction of sexual immorality or erotic behaviour. On the other hand, ‘Indecency’ means things that are lack of modesty, taste, or decency.

CRITICAL REFLECTION

1. Nowadays, these three things can be easily found in many types of media, such as television, internet,magazine and many more. This is because, producers or even directors think that with this kind of sexualilty things, it can increases the rating of the viewer of some movie, film or magazine. In my religion, we are not allowed to watch this kind of things and because of that statement, parents should be more careful to protect their kids from watching illegal things.

2. These three things is totally a bit different but it put as the same level with different kinds of meaning. Eventhough they got different meaning, all I could say is that these three things are totally bad and it is not good to be watch by underage kids. We have to prevent these things to be seen by underage children especially through their entertainment such as cartoon shows.

REFLECTION ON MLC CLASS

Well, honestly we didn't learn much anything on this week because the lecturer gave us some briefing about our second assignment on human needs that media may help to satisfy humans in term of news and entertainment.

Topic 4

WHAT IS MEDIA LITERACY?

I've found that Media Literacy is the ability to sift through and analyze the messages that inform, entertain us every day. Media Literacy is also the process of accessing messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres and forms. The conclusion is, Media Literacy is the ability to ACCESS, ANALYZE,EVALUATE and COMMUNICATE.

CRITICAL REFLECTION

1. Students can easily connect with media by using a variety types of media that can be used.It makes life getting easier to do something important and i think its difficult if there is no media literacy in our life. For example, students can discuss about their assignment by using messages, email, chatting and many more. So without these medias, I am sure life is harder.



2. Students can produce more artwork, production video and many more by using media literacy. If this kind of media doesn't exists in this world, i think people will be static ; they will never learn something new and interesting. Media literacy is important to FCM's students because a students can learn how to appreciate medias that have existed.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

I find that media literacy is very useful in my life. I am able to learn more about this interesting media. I can also learn how to appreciate media literacy in my life. I realised that media plays many roles in my daily life including my future too.

In my opinion, after watching the video, the two obvious critical reflection that had been shown were ;

Social Media produces advanced and high-teched society

Social media invites people to use information technology. This way, all age levels will try to learn how to use the company. Directly this will make the country becomes more developed. The society will also gain better knowledge by using social media. Other than that, the society in the country will become more updated with current issues.

People always find different and better alternatives to promote their products. Better in the way that how they can gain more profit by attracting more consumers to buy their product. Nowadays, various types of companies choose to advertise their products using blog. The author of the blog itself, or mainly called 'blogger', they have their own fans. Their words tend to convince their readers. Therefore, blog is now seen as one of the best alternative to pull consumers to use one's product.

Bring the people together

By using social media, society has the opportunity to voice out their opinion too. We can see that people nowadays use blog to express their feelings and thoughts. The people get to connect with each other much easier. One of the obvious blog that we can see is Chedet.com. ; its rating reaches almost a thousand daily. The people voiced out their opinion to our former prime minister. They even give out brilliant ideas and thoughts. Besides that, people use social media for gathering too. They made up their own community based on their interest. With that, people will start joining the community that had been built by the founder. There, they can exchange ideas and broaden their social network. This can also be seen at a well-known community website ; Circles99.com.



Social Media does give a huge impact on people all over the world. People even meet their love ones through social networks. All of the words stated above are my opinions towards Social Media. I think social media will keep on improving and people will keep on tracking with the field itself.

Well as for me, I think social media helps me connect with my friends. I get to know them better through alternatives such as Blogger.com, Myspace.com and Facebook.com. Other than that, by using those websites, it helps me meet with people who have the same interest as I am. This way, I get to gain more knowledge on what I am interested in by changing ideas and reading their blogs. Social media helps me connect with my friends easier too. Instead of meeting up at a 'mamak' restaurant, I can just instant message them right away through Myspace.com or Facebook.com when I feel like having a chat with my friends.

Taking Media Culture is a good choice although it seems difficult at first. In Media Culture class, I get to know what is the usage of media. Media Culture class taught me the positive outcomes of media too. Personally, I appreciate media more now because that was what I've learnt in Media Culture class so far. Slowly, I have built interest in media.
